Lake Thunderbird Humidity: Why East Norman Houses Feel Clammy

A recurring complaint from east Norman and the Little Axe area is a house that reads the right temperature on the thermostat and still feels wrong. Sticky, heavy, cold-but-damp. That is a moisture problem, and being near Lake Thunderbird makes it more likely rather than less.

Air conditioners dehumidify as a side effect of cooling. Warm humid air passes over a cold coil, moisture condenses out, and it drains away. But that only works if the system runs long enough for the coil to get and stay properly cold. An oversized air conditioner satisfies the thermostat quickly, shuts off, and never runs long enough to pull meaningful moisture out. You get a cold clammy house — which is exactly the complaint.

This is why "just put in a bigger one" is so often the wrong answer near the lake. A correctly sized system that runs longer, steadier cycles will leave a house dramatically more comfortable at the same thermostat setting than an oversized one that blasts and stops. Two-stage and variable-speed equipment take this further, because they can run extended low-capacity cycles that are almost entirely dehumidification.

A few things are worth checking before you conclude the equipment is wrong: a blower set too fast for the coil will re-evaporate condensate back into the airstream, a dirty coil will not condense properly, and duct leakage into a humid crawl space will bring moisture in faster than the system removes it.

If your house sits within a mile or so of the water and has never felt right in August, it is worth having someone actually measure indoor relative humidity rather than guessing from how it feels.
