Ragweed Season in Norman: August Through First Frost

Weed season in Oklahoma runs from August through October and is driven mostly by ragweed, with pigweed, lamb's quarters and Russian thistle along for the ride. It overlaps almost exactly with the tail of our cooling season, so in Norman you get peak pollen and heavy air conditioner runtime at the same time.

That overlap cuts both ways. A properly sealed house running its AC is one of the better places to be during ragweed season, because you are recirculating and filtering rather than opening windows. But the same runtime means anything wrong with your filtration or duct sealing gets amplified for three straight months.

East Norman and the Little Axe area are the worst of it. Once you are out toward Lake Thunderbird you have open ground on every side, and a lot of those addresses are on propane with longer line sets and more duct running through unconditioned space.

The single most common thing we find on these calls is a return that leaks. If the return side of your duct system is pulling from an attic, a crawl space, or a wall cavity instead of from the rooms, you are drawing outdoor air — and outdoor pollen — into the system continuously and then distributing it. Sealing that is usually a bigger win than any filter upgrade.

Do not forget the outdoor unit either. Ragweed and grass debris pack into a condenser coil over a season, and a dirty coil raises head pressure, costs efficiency, and shortens compressor life. A rinse at the end of the season is cheap insurance.
